Rep. Andrew Clyde to Newsmax: Save Crime-Infested DC From Itself

By    |   Tuesday, 07 February 2023 07:49 PM EST

Washington, D.C., has overruled even its Democrat Mayor Muriel Bowser, and Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., told Newsmax that Congress can and must stop liberal activist criminal justice reforms that leaves the U.S. capitol vulnerable to a crime infestation.

"Congress has to step in literally to save Washington, D.C., from itself, because this is our nation's capitol," Clyde told Tuesday's "Spicer & Co." "We are the lighthouse on the hill for the entire world, and this nation should have a safe and secure capitol, so all of the constituents from all of the members of Congress can come and visit their representatives here in Washington, D.C. and feel safe when they do that, because any other situation is simply unacceptable."

Crime has overwhelmed the once shining city on the hill, Clyde told co-hosts Sean Spicer and Lyndsay Keith.

"You see in Democrat cities across the country where crime is increasing because of the soft-on-crime policies of the Democrat-led governments, and this is a Democrat-led government here in the city of Washington, D.C., and they're having exactly the same issue and they're simply making it worse," Clyde continued. "But in the case of Washington, D.C., Congress has the authority to step in and fix it, and so we need to step in and fix it."

Clyde and 19 original co-sponsors introduced a resolution of disapproval to block the D.C. Council's Revised Criminal Code Act of 2022 (RCCA), which even the Democrat mayor has opposed. Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., plans to introduce the companion resolution of disapproval in the Senate.

"Any Republican or Democrat that doesn't vote for this resolution of disapproval is going to show themselves to be soft on crime – in favor of the criminal versus the victim," Clyde said.

Clyde noted the House will have a GOP majority to pass the resolution to protect D.C., but added the Senate GOP will only need a couple of votes from Democrats or independents to pass it, because it is a "privileged resolution"

"It doesn't have the 60 vote threshold to overcome," Clyde said. "It just has to get 51 votes in the Senate. And we're going to take this bill down because this is a soft-on-crime, very dangerous bill that will make crime even worse in the city.

"It sends the wrong message to criminals."
