The notoriously radical anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) has threatened to picket the funeral of Vice President Joe Biden's son, Beau, Saturday at a Catholic church in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.

On its website, the Topeka, Kansas, sect, which is infamous for picketing the funerals of soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq, warned, "Lord willing, WBC will zealously warn Joe Biden and the others at that time/place that God has clear standards, that He requires obedience, and that He curses those who refuse to obey, especially those who interfere with His people in their worship of and service to Him.

"Our faithful warning: Repent or likewise perish!"

The funeral of Biden, a former attorney general of Delaware who served with the Delaware Army National Guard and did a tour in Iraq in 2008 and 2009, and passed away from brain cancer at the age of 46, is set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, USA Today reports.

He is survived by his wife, Hallie, a daughter, Natalie, and a son, Hunter.

The church's threat has outraged locals in Delaware. John Fluharty, executive director of the Delaware Republican Party, told USA Today, "I think it's horrifying. Beau Biden served his country with honor and distinction and for anybody to question that or use it to serve their personal agenda in a negative fashion is absolutely despicable.

"They are entitled to their freedom of speech. I'm also entitled to be disgusted."

The vice president is well familiar with the church's tactics. Members toted signs that read "Fags are Beasts" and "America is Doomed" during Delaware's first same-sex marriage ceremony in 2013 and likewise protested at the funeral of the vice president's mother, Jean Finnegan Biden, in 2010, USA Today noted.

The group claims to have held more than 55,000 such protests in the last 14 years, including 400 protests at funerals of soldiers "whom God has killed in Iraq/Afghanistan in righteous judgment against an evil nation,'' its website states.

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) terms the WBC "arguably the most obnoxious and rabid hate group in America," and notes that it has been banned from holding protests in Great Britain and Canada.

Wilmington officials told USA Today that the group had not sought the required permit for a demonstration. In the past, they have said they would launch a protest but not shown up, as happened during funerals for the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Connecticut.

During a Thursday viewing, over 1,000 mourners showed up to pay their respects to Biden, as his grief-stricken father, with his face in his hands, stood by his son's flag-covered casket. President Barack Obama is to deliver Biden's eulogy at the funeral service Saturday.
