Hundreds of mourners greeted Vice President Joe Biden and his family with hugs and condolences as they paid their respects to his eldest son, who died of brain cancer last week.

Former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden was 46.

Beau Biden lay in honor Thursday in the state Senate chamber in Dover.

The vice president and other family members stood for hours in a receiving line at Legislative Hall, embracing and shaking hands with well-wishers.

Gov. Jack Markell and other state leaders praised Vice President Biden's oldest son in a ceremony that is unprecedented in Delaware history.

"Beau made Delaware a better place for us all," Markell told those gathered, which included Joe Biden's wife, Jill, Beau's widow Hallie, children Natalie and Hunter. Beau's brother, Hunter, and sister, Ashley. "The Biden family is Delaware's family. Know that we grieve with you."

During the solemn half-hour service in Dover's Legislative Hall, speakers praised Beau Biden for his efforts in office to protect children from sexual predators, punish violent criminals and stop senior citizens from being defrauded.

"Beau made Delaware a better place for us all. And he did so because of his determination and his persistence, because of his intellect and his willingness to fight," Markell said.

Delaware National Guard Maj. Gen. Francis D. Vavala, the adjutant general that served with Bident in the Guard, said, "We knew him in so many ways dear Lord. Major Biden, Attorney General Bide, dad, son, brother, husband. And we all knew him as Beau."

"Beau was a good and decent human being," he said. "And between the bookends are the triumphs too many to number."

The farewell tribute was to continue Friday, with afternoon and evening viewing hours at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Wilmington.

A funeral Mass was to be held Saturday at St. Anthony, with President Barack Obama delivering a eulogy.
