NY Gov. Cuomo Has 2 Options for Special Vote to Replace Weiner

Thursday, 16 June 2011 03:14 PM EDT

The timing of the special election to replace Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., is up to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has a couple of options.

The Democratic governor can set a separate date for the election or wait until the September ballot to save money, WNYC radio reported.

If he doesn’t call for a special election, candidates can collect signatures to get on the already scheduled Sept. 13 city election ballot. If sets an election, political parties will select their candidates.

Regardless, the 9th Congressional District, and the seat, could disappear when state legislators redraw congressional boundaries. Legislators must eliminate two seats as a result of the most recent U.S. Census, WNYC reported.

New York officials are well schooled in the ins and outs of replacing members of Congress who use the digital world to send photos that probably shouldn’t have been taken. Right before Weiner’s sexting scandal broke, a special election was held to replace Republican Rep. Chris Lee, who had sent a woman a shirtless photo of himself.
