The Trump administration, which has described the planned wall as “border security” with “steel slats” is facing a higher cost for the project because of the president’s tariffs on the metal, CNBC is reporting.
The cost of milled steel produces is up about 25 percent this year, according to the network. It matches the level of import duties President Donald Trump put on all steel produces made outside the county. The domestic makers of steel and milled products also raised their prices.
However, it is still not certain exactly what the wall, if it does get built, will be made of. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders had said the president “does not want to go further without border security, which includes steel slats or a wall.”
And Trump in a tweet said: "The Democrats, are saying loud and clear that they do not want to build a Concrete Wall – but we are not building a Concrete Wall, we are building artistically designed steel slats, so that you can easily see through it."
But even a concrete wall would feel the impact of the tariff since steel would be used in construction, CNBC reported.
The final costs for the wall have been estimated as high as $70 billion, CNBC noted.
