Rick Perry: Is Christie Conservative Enough for Rest of Country?

Republican Chris Christie may scored an impressive second-term victory on Tuesday, with 61 percent of the vote in a blue state, but fellow GOP Gov. Rick Perry of Texas isn't so sure how he'll play nationally.

"He was a successful governor is New Jersey," Perry told ABC's "This Week"  in an interview that aired Sunday. "Now, does that transcend to the country? We'll see in later years and months to come."

But Perry insisted that wasn't a coded way of calling Christie a moderate.

"We're all different states," Perry said. "Is a conservative in New Jersey, a conservative in the rest of the country?"

That's a discussion that will be had "at the appropriate time," Perry said.

Perry sought the GOP presidential nomination in 2012, losing to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Perry's term ends in 2014, and he hedged about whether he plans to seek the presidency again in 2016, though the interview was conducted in Iowa, an early caucus state.

Perry's warning that Christie might not be conservative enough sounded exactly like Christie's warning about those on the right that he says are less willing than himself to reach across the aisle. That warning: "If you can't win elections, you can't govern."
