Lt. Gov. Patrick to Newsmax TV: Texas Is Not A 'Toss Up'

By    |   Thursday, 29 October 2020 07:04 PM EDT

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick dismissed reports that the Lone Star state is a “toss up,” predicting on Newsmax TV on Thursday that President Donald Trump and Sen. John Cornyn will be re-elected without difficulty.

“The reality on the ground is, Trump will win Texas; Cornyn will win Texas,” Patrick said on “The Chris Salcedo Show.” “And the race might be closer than the nine-point victory it was a few years ago, because the Democrats have come on a little bit stronger and registered new voters.

“But Trump’s going to win, and Cornyn will win. And we’re not a toss-up state.”

Patrick, 70, elected in 2014 and also a former member of the Texas Senate for eight years, said he expects about 3 million more votes from Texas this year than in 2016. He also revealed that based on primary history voting, Republicans have an advantage of about 350,000 votes over Democrats.

Moreover, he said, Republicans lead on voters from general election history – i.e. those who live in districts with a 60-70% voting history of one party or the other.

“I feel very good about where we are, but I am telling all Texans, all Republicans, get out and vote,” Patrick said. “Do not sit back and take this election for granted, whether you’re in Pennsylvania, or Ohio, or Michigan, or Wisconsin, or Minnesota, or Florida, or Georgia, or Texas, because all of these races, particularly in some of those states I mentioned, will come down to the wire.

“Remember, Trump is president because he carried three states by a total of about 70,000 votes out of about 15-20 million votes. So every votes counts…Because my sixth-grade kid’s future is resting on the outcome of this election. And so is every grandchild out there and every parent out there.”

One issue Patrick suggested will be key to Texas is Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s stated position that he will “transition” away from petroleum as the country’s primary energy source.

“In Texas it would devastate our economy,” Patrick said. “We use a lot of oil and gas money for education, higher education…it would wipe away our reserve fund…put hundreds of thousands of people out of work. And directly and indirectly, one out of five Americans work indirectly or directly with the oil and natural gas business.”

He also predicted much higher costs for electricity, reduction or restrictions in electricity use, called brown outs, due to demand caused by elimination of the internal combustion engine and even Plexiglas.

“They’re on this fever pitch of getting rid of oil and gas for a purpose that no one can really prove scientifically that it’s impacting the climate,” Patrick said. “We’re all impacting the climate at some level, and the climate itself, the environment we’re in itself changes.”
