Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., could trigger her motion to vacate the House speakership on Monday, a source told Newsmax Senior Congressional Correspondent Kilmeny Duchardt.
Before filing a motion, Greene will meet with Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., at 3:30 p.m. ET Monday, Duchardt added.
Greene on Wednesday said she would trigger her motion this week to remove Johnson from the speakership. In late March, she formally filed a motion to remove the speaker due to his support of the $1.2 trillion spending bill.
Greene and several other conservatives wanted Congress to address border security before providing foreign aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.
"We need leaders in the House of Representatives that are going to get this done," Greene said Wednesday. "Mike Johnson is not capable of that job."
Greene, a strong supporter of Donald Trump, is going against the wishes of the former president.
Trump last month offered words of praise for Johnson, saying he is "trying very hard" and is "a very good person."
"Look, we have a majority of one [in the House]," Trump said. "It's not like he can go and do whatever he wants. I think he's a very good person. I think he's a very good man. I think he's trying very hard. And, again, we have to have a very big election to increase the Republican majority in the House."
Johnson, in his own statement, said Greene's move was "wrong for the Republican Conference, wrong for the institution, and wrong for the country."
Democrats see in Johnson a potential partner, a staunch conservative who nevertheless is willing to lead his Republican Party away from the far-right voices obstructing the routine business of governing, including funding the government and, more recently, supporting Ukraine and other U.S. allies overseas.
The Democrat leader, New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, and his team issued a joint statement last week saying it was time to "turn the page" on the GOP chaos, announcing that the Democrats would vote to table Greene's motion to vacate the speaker's office, essentially ensuring Johnson is not evicted from office — at least on this attempt.
