The Senate Ethics Committee has closed its case involving Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., Politico is reporting.
Menendez had been admonished by the panel last spring for receiving gifts from Florida eye doctor Salomon Melgen. The gifts had not been initially disclosed or repaid, according to Politico.
But Menendez ended up repaying Melgen over $112,000 for private flights, car transportation, and lodging in 2006, 2008 and 2010, according to documents obtained by the website. Melgen is now serving a prison sentence for Medicare fraud.
“Having already received documentation that all impermissible gifts have been repaid, the committee hereby considers this matter closed,” Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., committee chairman and Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., vice chairman said in Feb. 1 letter.
And Menendez said: "I'm pleased this issue is closed.”
Menendez was tried on federal corruption charges in 2017, but his trial ended in a hung jury. In January 2018, all charges against him were dropped by the Department of Justice.
