Democrats have been tossing a nearly three-year "tantrum" over the election of President Donald Trump — and the behavior has become “abusive,” Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., said Wednesday.
In an interview on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom,” Kennedy called the Democrat-led House Judiciary Committee’s threat to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt if subpoenaed documents aren’t handed over “wicked crazy.”
“Congress has an appropriate oversight role, but you have to have a legitimate legislative purpose, and I think it's clear to most Americans that some of my friends in the House leadership have decided just to be abusive,” Kennedy said. “They’ve asked the y administration for everything but the kitchen sink … and they may ask for that.”
“And we are going into the third year where they have been throwing a tantrum over the election results,” he added. “They need to leave the man alone, let him be president. They can vote against him in a year and a half.”
House Judiciary Committee chair Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., is now offering to negotiate with the Department of Justice without conditions on the subpoena requests.
Nadler, however, pointedly refused to cancel the planned contempt vote prior to beginning any new negotiations, as the DOJ had demanded, reported Fox News, which posted a clip of Kennedy's remarks.
"I wish I didn't have to say this. There are some members of the House leadership whose only mission in life is to demonize the president,” Kennedy said.
