In a down year for Hollywood revenues, Fathom Events has reportedly seen a 45% rise driven by religious programing, anime, and old movies.
"Faith has been a big category for us," CEO Ray Nutt told The Financial Times.
The movie industry is finding Americans are craving religious content as Hollywood executives are coming up short in that department, according to the report.
"There’s a lot of people that aren't in New York and LA and we've got to make sure we're making movies and TV shows for everyone," one executive told FT.
Fathom Events' "The Chosen" has grossed more than $31 million at the box office while being available for free on its own streaming platform as "religious influencers" have helped get the word out.
"People looked at us like we had two heads and said, 'That will never work in a movie theater,' but we knew the audience," Nutt told FT. "People bought tickets in droves to see it. It says something about the moviegoing experience and people wanting to gather communally."
Fathom Events set a 20-year-high with $145 million in revenue, outperforming the industry that is down from 2023.
According to Box Office Mojo, the U.S. gross of $7.8 billion in 2024 is down from 2023's $9 billion with three weeks left.
