Hillary Clinton and Steven Spielberg are joining together to produce a new TV drama about the spirited battle by American women to win the right to vote.
The program, to be either a TV movie or a limited series, will be based on “The Woman’s Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote,” the acclaimed book by Elaine Weiss, published by Viking.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the story, Clinton called the book an “unforgettable” look at "the female leaders who — in the face of towering economic, racial and political opposition — fought for and won American women's right to vote.”
“[It’s] an inspiration for everyone, young and old, male and female, in these perilous times. So much could have gone wrong, but these American women would not take no for an answer: their triumph is our legacy to guard and emulate.”
The former secretary of state and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee will executive-produce the series for Amblin Television, the company co-founded by Spielberg, the Oscar-winning director whose films include “Jaws,” “Schindler’s List,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” and “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.”
According to Viking, Weiss’ book focuses on “The nail-biting climax of one of the greatest political battles in American history: the ratification of the constitutional amendment that granted women the right to vote.”
It zeroes in on Nashville, Tennessee in August 1920, after 35 states had ratified the Nineteenth Amendment, 12 had rejected it or refused to vote, and one last state was needed. Opposing forces included politicians with careers at stake, liquor companies, railroad magnates, and racists who feared allowing black women the vote.
