Former President Donald Trump's guilty verdict in his New York criminal trial Thursday led to a fundraising bonanza.
The Trump campaign announced it had raised $34.8 million less than 24 hours after he was convicted of 34 felony charges in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election by paying for the silence of a porn actor who claimed they had an affair. The trial and subsequent conviction marked the first time a former U.S. president has been tried or convicted in a criminal case.
The $34.8 million is double the previous single-day fundraising haul, said Chris LaCivita and Susan Wiles, senior advisors to the Trump campaign. Trump's conviction "awakened the MAGA movement like never before," they said.
"Just minutes after the sham trial verdict was announced, our digital fundraising system was overwhelmed with support," LaCivita and Wiles said.
LaCivita and Wiles said 29.7% of Thursday's donations came from new donors. Trump received so many donations that his fundraising website crashed for more than 30 minutes.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee reported its highest online fundraising day of the verdict, raising $360,000. Donations tripled after the verdict, the NRSC said.
"Outrage over the sham verdict against Trump has spurred average Americans into action," Jason Thielman, the executive director of the NRSC said. "The people are energized and determined to take back the White House and Senate."
The National Republican Congressional Committee raised $300,000 after the Trump verdict, surpassing the $175,000 it raised when Mike Johnson was elected House Speaker, Punchbowl News reported.
