If the Supreme Court fails to repeal all of the 2010 healthcare law in its decision slated for Thursday, House Republicans will work assiduously to finish the job, says Majority Leader Eric Cantor.
“There's clearly a consensus at least in the House of Representatives that Obamacare was a mistake and that we need to really repeal the law, so we can get back to the kind of healthcare outlook most Americans are looking for,” Cantor told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” show.
Many experts anticipate the court will dump the law’s individual mandate that would require people to buy health insurance. But many experts also expect the court to leave Obamacare largely untouched outside of that.
“What we hope to have happen if the court only strikes down a portion of the law, the House will move to repeal the whole thing,” Cantor said. “And then we will begin to go and put back together a healthcare plan that actually stresses choice on the part of families, the ability to access the kind of healthcare tailored to your own needs.”
House leaders are determined to come up with their own healthcare plan that would fix the problems of Obamacare, such as its failure to address rising costs, Cantor said. “Costs became secondary, if not tertiary” in the 2010 law, he said.
“Patients and doctors, healthcare providers can do a lot better. There’s a lot of innovation that’s going on out there in the market. We need to capture that and provide some more choice and focus in this country on disease management.”
