For most of the campaign this year, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu was considered a sure winner. But even some of the governor’s fellow Republicans are not so certain after a poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire was released Monday.
According to the figures from the UNH Survey Center, Sununu and Democrat Molly Kelly are tied with 49 percent of the vote each. Two percent of the vote went to Libertarian Jilletta Jarvis. The margin of error was +/-3.9 percentage points.
These figures stood in striking contrast to those UNH came up with a month ago, when Sununu led former State Sen. Kelly by 50 to 39 percent.
“I’m not sure those numbers are correct,” former State Attorney General Tom Rath, a player in the Republican presidential primary quadrennially since 1980, told Newsmax, “But if they are, it is because of Kelly’s overwhelming edge in TV and mail. She has created an issue — paid family leave — through a very big TV buy supplemented by mail. Republicans have been a bit flatfooted in their response.”
