Democrat and former astronaut Mark Kelly is still leading appointed Republican Sen. Martha McSally in the race for the Arizona Senate seat long held by Republican legends John McCain and Barry Goldwater.
According to a just-completed OH Predictive Insights poll, Kelly leads McSally 50% to 45% among likely voters statewide. This is roughly the same margin by which Kelly has led the former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot and congresswoman for the last month.
The same poll showed Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden leading President Donald Trump 49% to 45% for the state’s 11 electoral votes.
With the exception of President Bill Clinton in 1996, Arizona has gone for the Republican nominee for president since 1952.
A victory by Kelly, husband of former Rep. Gabby Giffords, D-Ariz., will be the first time the Grand Canyon State has elected a Democrat senator since 1988.
Last week, McSally got a boost with the endorsement of three former astronauts — Tom Stafford, Jack Lousma, and Charlie Duke. Kelly supporters quickly noted that Lousma was the 1984 Republican U.S. Senate nominee in Michigan and that Stafford is a lifelong Oklahoma Republican who seriously eyed bids for the U.S. Senate before.
