Giuliani Thinks Cuomo Should Run for President

Tuesday, 28 June 2011 11:58 AM EDT

Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo sidesteps questions about whether he would run for president in 2016, but Republican Rudy Giuliani believes he ought to run, because of his success in pushing through the Empire State’s new law allowing same-sex marriage, reports the New York Post.

"Governor Cuomo deserves a lot of credit. Even if you don't agree with the result, it showed a lot of leadership to execute the result," the former New York City mayor said in response the bipartisan passage of the gay marriage bill, which Cuomo signed into law shortly after the Senate approved it Friday.

"For the first time in a long time, we're seeing leadership at the gubernatorial level in New York in a lot of areas . . . and I think it's a good sign for a lot of other things the governor can do."

On Monday, Cuomo said on a radio show that he is not ruling out a 2016 White House bid but that he does not want to “fuel this speculation.”

The newspaper quotes a Democratic insider on the ripples from Cuomo’s successful championing of the bill.

"In one fell swoop, Cuomo has accomplished what every politician wants to accomplish but rarely does,” the Post quotes former Bill Clinton and Al Gore aide Chris Lehane as saying. “That's establishing a 'courage brand.' "
