WASHINGTON — House Speaker John Boehner says the United States must stand with Israel as a strong and reliable ally, not just as a broker or observer.
In remarks prepared for delivery during the Jewish Nation Fund's conference in Cincinnati today, Boehner dismisses suggestions that Israel is isolating itself in the Middle East. Israel stands above others as a beacon of freedom and opportunity in the region, the Ohio Republican insists, according to a text of his remarks made available in advance.
On the eve of an expected contentious U.N. General Assembly meeting on the Mideast, Boehner says Israel will be under fire on several fronts. He cites the Palestinians' bid for statehood recognition and an upcoming speech by a leading Israeli foe, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
