13 Fraternity Members Surrender after Pledge Death

Tuesday, 18 December 2012 10:34 PM EST

CHICAGO (AP) — Thirteen of the 22 fraternity members facing hazing-related charges after the death of a Northern Illinois University student have turned themselves in.

A DeKalb Police Department spokesman said Tuesday that seven people surrendered in DeKalb. All posted bond and were released.

The others turned themselves in to other police departments. It's unclear if they'd posted bond.

Nineteen-year-old David Bogenberger died after drinking heavily during a Nov. 1 party at the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house in DeKalb, about 60 miles west of Chicago.

Police say Bogenberger and other pledges drank large quantities of liquor over two hours.

The local coroner determined that Bogenberger's blood-alcohol content was about five times the legal limit for driving. His cause of death was ruled as cardiac arrhythmia, with alcohol intoxication as a contributing cause.
