The United Kingdom on Saturday condemned what it called Iran’s "reckless attacks" after Tehran fired ballistic missiles toward a joint U.S.-UK military base in the Indian Ocean.
A U.S. official said Iran launched two intermediate-range missiles at Diego Garcia on Friday, but neither struck the base.
Iranian state-linked media confirmed the target, with Mehr news agency saying the missiles were aimed at "the military base of the oppressors in Diego Garcia."
The remote island base is a key hub for U.S. military operations across the Middle East and beyond.
Britain’s Ministry of Defence warned that "Iran’s reckless attacks, lashing out across the region and holding hostage the Strait of Hormuz, are a threat to British interests and British allies."
The incident follows London’s decision to allow the U.S. to use British bases for limited defensive operations targeting missile systems used in attacks on shipping, further raising tensions in the region.
