Hundreds of pilots, mechanics and other airline workers at LAX, the third-busiest airport in the nation, have formed a colony of part-time residents living in a parking lot just off the major runways.
They are citizens of one of the most unusual communities in the United States, one that has grown as salaries for airline workers plummeted over the last decade. Though it’s loud and dirty, most say they see no other way to make ends meet and raise families back in their hometowns.
