Politico Poll: Voters Increasingly Aware of Domestic Terror

Americans are becoming increasingly aware of the threat of white nationalism, according to the latest Politico/Morning Consult poll.

In a 10-point rise from March, 47% of voters in the poll see white nationalism as a threat now after this weekend's mass murders in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

Both the New Zealand and El Paso shooters allegedly wrote anti-immigration screeds before their deadly attacks.

The New Zealand mosque shootings left 51 people dead and 37% of American voters viewing white nationalism as a threat back in March, according to the poll.

Despite the increase, white nationalism still trails Islamic extremism (49%) as a threat, according to American voters in the poll.

The perceived threat of white nationalism increase across the parties, but was most pronounced for independent voters in the poll:

• 69% of Democrats view white nationalism as a threat, an uptick of 11 points since New Zealand.
• 45% of Independents view white nationalism as a threat, an uptick of 12 points.
• 22% of Republicans view white nationalism as a threat, a 5-point rise.

The Politico/Morning Consult poll was taken Aug. 5-7, surveying 1,960 registered voters, and contains a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
