Fifty-four percent of registered voters "somewhat" or "strongly" agree former President Donald Trump should be convicted during his upcoming impeachment trial, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll released Monday.
And 58% say he should either "probably" or "definitely" be barred from running for office in the future.
The Senate trial starts Tuesday after the House charged Trump with "incitement of insurrection" for his role in the Jan. 6 storming of the Capitol that left five dead.
Trump's legal team has pushed back on the charges, saying the trial is unconstitutional and his speech did not incite the rioters.
"This was only ever a selfish attempt by Democratic leadership in the House to prey upon the feelings of horror and confusion that fell upon all Americans across the entire political spectrum upon seeing the destruction at the Capitol on Jan. 6 by a few hundred people," Trump's lawyers wrote in a 75-page pretrial brief filed Monday.
The Politico poll also found:
- 56% of voters say Trump should testify under oath for the impeachment trial.
- 19% of Republicans agree Trump should be convicted.
- 7% of Democrats say Trump should not be impeached or convicted.
The poll was conducted Feb. 5-7 among 1,986 registered voters. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 2 percentage points.
