The USNS Comfort has discharged its last patients and will depart New York at the end of the month to its homeport in Virginia, the U.S. Navy said Sunday.
The Comfort, a 1,000-bed hospital ship, was brought to New York to assist in the response to the coronavirus pandemic. It has been docked at a Manhattan pier since March 30.
"We are proud and humbled to have assisted New York and New Jersey in this capacity," said Navy spokeswoman Lt. Marycate Walsh.
The ship, originally deployed to care for patients without coronavirus, shifted gears and started accepting them as the city’s hospitals were overloaded with people suffering from the disease. The ship treated 182 people in total.
Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said the Comfort's impending departure "is a sure sign of modest progress in mitigating the virus in the nation's hardest-hit city and is a welcome sign."
