Blanket driving bans were lifted and New York public transport was to reopen Tuesday after a night of snowfall that saw around two feet (60 centimeters) dumped in some areas.

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo said a travel ban imposed in 13 counties would be lifted at 8:00 am (1300 GMT) and updates made available on what public transport would be up and running.

"The plows have been working, salt trucks have been working, but it is not to be taken lightly. We're not saying that you should go out unless you really need to go out," he told CNN.

"And there will be delays on the roads. But we think we can lift the travel ban in coordination with our neighboring states. And we'll start to bring the public transportation system back online."

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie also announced that the travel ban in the state was lifting.

Cuomo said many areas had received two feet (60 centimeters) of snow and that Long Island had been particularly affected, but said New York city had experienced less damage.
