Student Held in School Threat in California

Thursday, 09 October 2014 03:54 PM EDT

A student with a cache of weapons arrested for investigation of threatening to shoot, stab and assault staff members at his high school in the California desert community of Yucca Valley, authorities said.

The arrest came Wednesday after staff members at Black Rock High School reported the threat and detectives served a search warrant at the Twentynine Palms home of 18-year-old Matthew Ross, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

Detectives found firearms, hundreds of rounds of rifle and shotgun ammunition, hunting knives, swords, hatchets and crossbows, Deputy Shaunna Ables said. The suspect was taken into custody at the school.

Ross told deputies he wasn't getting respect from teachers, Ables said.

He had accumulated weapons over the past few years and started buying ammunition when he turned 18, she said.

Ross was booked into a county jail and held in lieu of $50,000 bail. He was expected to be arraigned Friday.

Christopher Lee with the district attorney's office said he didn't know if Ross had a lawyer.

Yucca Valley is a town with about 20,000 residents in the Mojave Desert about 110 miles east of Los Angeles.
