AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Two Texas candidates who got donations from Tom DeLay's political action committee that prosecutors allege were illegal say they believed the funds were lawfully given.
Todd Baxter and Dwayne Bohac testified Tuesday at the former lawmaker's money-laundering trial. They were two of seven candidates for state representative who prosecutors say illegally received a portion of $190,000 in corporate donations DeLay's PAC allegedly funneled into 2002 GOP legislative races.
Baxter received $35,000, while Bohac got $20,000. Both men won their elections.
Prosecutors allege the donations came from corporations through DeLay's PAC. Under Texas law, corporate money can't go directly to political campaigns. The former U.S. House majority leader denies wrongdoing.
