IG Report Criticizes Christie's Travel as US Atty

Monday, 08 November 2010 08:05 PM EST

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department's inspector general says that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie engaged in a pattern of abuse when he was U.S. attorney by billing taxpayers to stay at luxury hotels.

The IG's report found that the Republican governor, who prides himself on saving money for his state's taxpayers, did not comply with federal travel regulations or provide appropriate justification for his lodging costs which exceeded the government rate.

Christie was one of five U.S. attorneys singled out for criticism in the IG's review of U.S. attorney travel that exceeded the government lodging rate. Christie was the chief federal prosecutor for New Jersey from 2002 until Dec. 1, 2008, when he resigned to run for governor. He became governor last January.
