Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe managed to raise more than $6 million last year from more than 9,000 donors in his bid to reclaim his old post in 2021, The Hill reports.
The Democrat’s campaign, which he launched just last month, announced on Monday that they raised $6.1 million in 2020, 90% of which came from contributions under $100, to end the year with a total of $5.5 million in cash-on-hand. In 2013, when McAuliffe won the office, he raised $1.2 million and finished the year with $1 million in cash, and in 2016 he raised $3 million to end the year with $2.3 million in cash.
“I’m running for governor because we need to think big and act boldly to create a better, more equitable future for all Virginians. My campaign is building a strong coalition with a shared vision to move Virginia forward, and I am proud to have the support of so many Virginians from across the Commonwealth,” McAuliffe said in a statement.
Although the former governor faces several competitors for the Democrat nomination, including Virginia Lieutenant Gov. Justin Fairfax, he has several top members of the party in his state on his campaign committee. House Majority Leader Charniele Herring, Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney, and state Sen. L. Louise Lucas are all co-chairs on McAuliffe's campaign.
