A public school teacher who allegedly offered to pay people infected with coronavirus to cough on President Donald Trump has resigned, according to TV station WJAR.
“Somebody with COVID-19, I will pay you to cough on #Trump,” Amy Bednarz, a teacher at a Rhode Island public school, wrote on Twitter in late March:
The account has since been deleted.
“The contents of the tweet were both vile and despicable and in no way reflect the core values or ideals of the Woonsocket Education Department,” Superintendent of Schools Woonsocket Education Department Patrick McGee said in an email to the Providence Journal in announcing a district investigation into the Twitter post.
Angelica Infante-Green, the state’s Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education, in a tweet said she was “saddened and disappointed” to read the tweet.
“It is unprofessional and sends the wrong message during a time when our whole education community is setting a national example," she tweeted. "This is not acceptable and certainly not representative of the overwhelming majority of RI teachers."
