Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop says it is time to open things up and allow residents to make the responsible choices and use good judgment.
"I think we need to be realistic that, absent of vaccine or some treatment, there's going to be risk in our society and in our environment, and it doesn't matter how many measures you put in place to reopen the economy, if there's no vaccine and if there's people out there with COVID-19, the potential of it spreading is going to exist," Fulop told Newsmax TV's "American Agenda."
Fulop on Monday reopened parks to give residents new options for outdoor recreation and exercise.
Nearly 5,000 people have confirmed cases of coronavirus, with 278 deaths.
"I am just a believer that you can either open slowly the economy, and be responsible in that way, or you are kind of left to choose to wait for a vaccine," Fulop said.
"Those seem like the two options – ultimately where people are – land. I'm not of the school of thought of treading water or staying in place or not moving forward for that matter. That's why we're making the decisions that we're making."
