Praising resigning U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley, Stephen Harper, the former Prime Minister of Canada, told Newsmax TV that Haley has been an ideal articulator of President Donald Trump's "very unorthodox American approach to foreign policy."

"She's one of those people who has managed to articulate a much more forceful, and in many ways a very unorthodox, American approach to foreign policy in a way that has gained her a lot of respect and admiration," Harper told Tuesday's "America Talks Live."

Harper has dealt with Haley before when she was governor of South Carolina, and he said the mutual respect and admiration between Haley and the one-time target of her criticism President Trump was very genuine, rejecting any notion Haley's resignation was over a rift with the president or his policies.

"My general experience in politics is that when people come and make statements those are usually the real reasons, but unfortunately what happens is a bunch of journalists will pile in a bunch of invented stories to serve their agendas," Harper told hosts John Cardillo and Dr. Gina Loudon.

Harper's book "Right Here, Right Now: Politics and Leadership in the Age of Disruption" was released Tuesday, which in part details the challenges of the U.N. that Haley is leaving behind.

"In this age of change and disruption, people are also pushing back when they don't see they have control over their own affairs," Harper said. "Part of the problem in Europe – in many ways I am admirer of the European Union – but part of the problem in Europe is people feel that their nations have lost control of their futures."

But, as Harper wrote in his book, "there's a big choice between being on one liberal extreme or a far right extreme."

"Conservatism is in the middle," Harper said. "And there's a lot of reasonable things we can do to respond to public angst about real problems."
