Conference of Jewish Affairs spokesman Rabbi Aryeh Spero on Thursday defended Ric Grenell's appointment to the Holocaust Memorial Council after Halie Soifer questioned the assignment and suggested the “bigoted and intolerant” CEO of the Jewish Democratic Council of America be expelled from her role.
Soifer on Thursday tweeted opposition to the announcement, saying Grenell, the former U.S. ambassador to Germany, sought to “empower far-right parties & anti-establishment conservatives in Europe. Others have been unqualified, but he's emboldened actual neo-Nazis.”
“Once again Halie Soifer of the Jewish Democratic Council of America is using her vicious tongue to malign a good person simply because that individual holds politically conservative views," Spero said in a statement issued Thursday.
"After the appointment this week of former U.S. Ambassador Richard Grenell to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council, Soifer accused him of Nazi-like affiliations even though Mr. Grenell has a history of boldly standing up for Jewish causes and denouncing anti-Semitism. Ambassador Grenell is a very fine human being.
“For Soifer truth does not matter, only the destruction of people with opposing views. For years she has labeled those of us with conservative views as closet Nazis. Beyond question, there is a bigotry involved by those, like Soifer, who view patriotic Americans as evil. It is high time that Jewish Democrats expel this intolerant and bigoted individual as their spokesperson."
