A Columbia, South Carolina, police officer has been suspended after a video captured him using a racist slur against Black people outside of a bar in the city’s Five Points neighborhood.
In the video, Sgt. Chad Walker, who is white, is shown outside of Bar None on Saturday using the N-word several times while claiming that it’s acceptable for him to say it because a Black man said it to him earlier.
"People of color? The gentleman right there that called me a n-----?" Walker says at one point in the video to an unidentified person.
The Columbia Police Department has since suspended Walker without pay until the disciplinary command review board makes a decision.
"After reviewing the video from last night in Five Points, it is evident the actions of Sgt. Walker were a clear failure to fulfill the expectations and standards of our Department. The repetition of the racial slur and failure to deescalate the situation were inexcusable," said Columbus Chief of Police W.H. "Skip" Holbrook in a statement on Sunday, adding that he "shares the public’s outrage and frustration regarding the highly offensive and disrespectful incident, and that the “CPD sincerely apologizes for the inappropriate, disrespectful words, behavior and actions of Sgt. Walker.”
