Los Angeles may not allow any large scale events to occur until 2021 to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
The delay in bringing back big gatherings like concerts and sporting was discussed in an internal Los Angeles Fire Department email, obtained by the Los Angeles Times.
Mayor Eric Garcetti raised the issue during his weekly phone briefing Monday with staff, including the fire chief.
Garcetti indicated during the conference call that “large gatherings such as concerts and sporting events may not be approved in the city for at least 1 year,” according to the email that was distributed on Tuesday.
Fire Department spokesman Peter Sanders said Tuesday that the email was “paraphrasing information he received from the mayor regarding possible scenarios for reopening timelines across a range of events.”
Garcetti's spokesman Alex Comisar confirmed the mayor’s comments.
“The mayor was generally referencing studies of current and historical data and best practices for safely reopening our economy,” Comisar told the newspaper, adding the mayor doesn’t have a timeline for LA to begin resuming large-scale events.
The mayor’s hesitation to allow large events to take place is in line with comments made by Gov. Gavin Newsom this week.
He said that events that draw crowds will be off limits for the near future.
“The prospect of mass gatherings is negligible at best until we get to herd immunity and we get to a vaccine,” Newsom said.
