Serial Killer From Marial Boatlift Sentenced in Third US Murder

A serial killer who was convicted in a third murder case dating back to the early 1980s was reportedly came to the United States from Cuba as part of the Mariel boatlift after Fidel Castro cleared many of the country's prisons and mental hospitals.

According to The Daily Beast, Jesus Aguilera has spent the last 33 years in a U.S. prison for torturing and murdering two women in 1981, plus two sexual assaults that almost led to two more slayings.

On Monday, the 61-year-old Aguilera was sentenced 15 years to life in a third murder case, to go along with the two life sentences he was already given for the other two murders. All of the crimes took place in New York City.

According to Time Warner Cable News, Aguilera's conviction in the third murder makes him a serial killer.

Aguilera has long been suspected of murdering four people in a nine-month span, reports The Daily Beast. The report explains how Aguilera was released from a Cuban prison and made his way to the United States as part of a mass emigration of roughly 125,000 Cubans who left Mariel Harbor in 1980 for the U.S. mainland.

Aguilera, according to The Daily Beast, was placed in a refugee camp but was released to a brother in the U.S. soon after, at which point he made his way from Arkansas to New York and committed the murders. He was arrested nine months after arriving in the Big Apple.

He was sentenced on Monday after investigators uncovered new evidence in 2009 that linked Aguilera to the third murder. That victim's daughter spoke directly to Aguilera in the courtroom.

"As you take your final breath, I pray that your last vision is of the Almighty God surrounded by all the victims, known and unknown, and you vividly see these women, joyful, healthy, powerful, and whole, forever untouched by the evil that destroyed you and your humanity," Robin Bynoe said, according to The Daily Beast.

President Barack Obama announced in December that the U.S. and Cuba would normalize relations more than 50 years after the United States severed ties with the island nation.
