Senate Hawks to Filibuster Against Debt Limit Increase

By    |   Wednesday, 30 March 2011 03:39 PM EDT

Fiscal hawks in the Senate vow to filibuster against an increase of the government’s debt limit above $14.3 trillion, The Hill reports. That will make it difficult for President Barack Obama to gain approval of the bill.

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, has promised supporters in his home state that he will filibuster. “That’s my intention, to filibuster it,” said the Senate Tea Party Caucus member. Lee said he might be persuaded to change his stance if Obama and Democratic leaders agreed to a major concession, which Republican strategists consider very improbable.

“The concession would [have to] be something very significant, very permanent and very binding, like a balanced-budget amendment — and passage of it, not just a vote,” Lee said.
