Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey is implying student athletes are safer on campus than they are at home.
His comments came during an interview on HBO’s “Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel.” The show tweeted an excerpt of the interview in advance of the Tuesday night broadcast.
During the interview, Sankey was asked if college football players and other athletes, who have returned to campuses for workouts during the coronavirus pandemic, are at greater risk.
“You’re asking a question in comparison,” he said. “So in comparison to what? To having them workout at homes — or home gyms that may have been their own hotspots without oversight of sports medicine specialists, without strength and conditioning coaches? And that reality informed what I still believe was the right decision.”
In an interview on the Dan Patrick Show on Monday, Sankey said: “Six weeks ago we were just starting to have student athletes back on campus. We’ve done that safely. The diagnostic, the oversight … I think has worked. Our feedback has been the time that we can oversee young people, we feel good about this. It’s that other part of life that we have to continue to manage, particularly as our campus communities continue to fill up.”
