GOP Urges Romney to Offer Upbeat Message

By    |   Wednesday, 26 September 2012 08:17 PM EDT

Mitt Romney is being encouraged to be more assertive and optimistic about the future as he struggles to prevent Barack Obama from winning a second term in the White House.

The approach is being pushed by Republican strategists and outside groups, who are concerned about the GOP presidential nominee’s recent decline in the polls, according to Politico.

Romney’s persistent difficulties have led party members to question a basic premise of his campaign: that voters will not reelect a president who has overseen years of 8-plus percent unemployment, Politico reports.

The latest swing-state polling on Wednesday from The New York Times, CBS News and Quinnipiac University showed Romney trailing his Democratic opponent by 9 points in Florida, 10 points in Ohio and 12 points in Pennsylvania.

The future-oriented direction being touted by Republican strategists seeks to aim less at emphasizing Obama’s economic failures over the past four years and to emphasize more the stakes for the future, Politico reports.
