Joe Biden and Sen. Kamala Harris, his running mate on the Democratic Party's presidential ticket, offered their condolences to President Donald Trump Sunday morning after his brother's death.

The morning after Robert Trump's passing in a New York City hospital, Biden wrote:

"Mr. President, Jill and I are sad to learn of your younger brother Robert's passing. I know the tremendous pain of losing a loved one — and I know how important family is in moments like these. I hope you know that our prayers are with you all."

Harris, a California Democrat, replied to Biden's tweet a short time later by writing:

"Doug and I join the Biden family in sending our deepest condolences and prayers to the entire Trump family during this difficult time. Losing a loved one is never easy but know that we are thinking of you."

Robert Trump died Saturday night at age 71 after an undisclosed illness. The president is expected to attend his funeral.
