Cash needed to be injected into the economy to keep workers at their jobs after they were displaced by the coronavirus crisis, but now, lawmakers must turn not to how much more can be spent, but how to help businesses recover, Rep. Kevin Brady said Wednesday.
"I think that is key to getting people back to work," the Texas Republican said on Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "We are creating an awful lot of pain for a long time for a lot of workers and families. That doesn't need to happen. Does Congress really need to turn to how can we help? How can we make these workplaces stay for workers and customers?"
Meanwhile, there is a huge demand from small businesses for money, and Brady said he's confident the latest infusion of cash, coming in a bill approved by the Senate on Tuesday and headed for a vote in the House on Thursday, will get to small businesses.
Also, he said that unemployment benefits must be tweaked so people are encouraged to take job offers when they come.
Brady also commented on the plummeting oil market, saying that he does think lawmakers should concentrate on reopening the economy, but the collapse in oil prices is a national issue.
"I don't have a crystal ball but it seems to me that the two biggest things we can do is help get them the capital they need to keep these workers and ride this out," said Brady. "We need more demand. We need the economy to reopen again safely and responsibly.
Brady added that there are even more incentives that should come into play to make sure that testing and treatments are produced in the United States.
