NAACP Board Member Deplores Cardinals Fans' Ferguson Taunts

John Gaskin III, a member of the NAACP national board of directors says he was appalled by "offensive remarks" aimed at Ferguson protesters Monday night outside Busch Stadium.

According to media reports, a handful of supporters of Michael Brown, the unarmed black teen shot to death in August by white Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, were protesting outside the National League playoff game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers.

"The images that I saw of last night and some of the remarks that came from some of the fans was quite embarrassing for my city," Gaskin said Tuesday on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer."

According to the New York Daily News, some white fans outside the gate began yelling back at the protesters who can be seen at the beginning of the video chanting, "We'll shut this down!"

"We're the ones who … gave all y'all all the freedoms that you have!" one woman yelled at the group of black protesters holding signs and chanting "Justice for Mike Brown!"

Some of the Cardinals fans began chanting, "Let's go, Darren!" in response, a reference to the officer under investigation for Brown's shooting death. One fan taped a sign on his back reading, "I am Darren Wilson."

Fans also chanted "Get a job!" while one man yelled "Go home" and the woman who had talked about whites giving blacks their freedoms yelled, "Africa!" the Daily News noted.

The two teams were playing again in Busch Stadium Tuesday night.

The NAACP's Gaskin told CNN that people should have a right to protest and voice their opinions in safety. Though the clash was heated, there no physical violence was reported and no arrests were made.

"I hope things remain calm tonight and certainly hope that tensions will calm down," he said.

Another Ferguson protest occurred over the weekend at a St. Louis symphony performance.
