New Video Game Includes Petraeus Character

“Call of Duty: Black Ops II,” a video game released by Activision Blizzard Wednesday, includes a David Petraeus character.

The former four-star general quit his job as CIA director last week after engaging in an extramarital affair. The timing of the game’s launch was coincidental, Activision Blizzard says.

“Gen. Petraeus was not paid, was not involved in the creation of the game, and has not been asked to endorse the game,” the company said in a statement. “It is clear to game players that his character and others that are based on real-life figures are fantasy.”

Putting Petraeus and other real-life characters in the game “was strictly a creative decision made many months ago when the storyline was drafted,” the statement says. “We are not commenting further on the latest news or Gen. Petraeus. His service to his country and career accomplishments are a matter of public record.”

Petraeus has only a brief role in the game, greeting troops aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Barack Obama as secretary of Defense.

Ironically enough, Lt. Col. Oliver North, who had controversies of his own in the 1980s, served as a military adviser to the game’s creators, according to CNET.
