Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan says the mainstream media's dislike for President Donald Trump permeates every network and is destructive.
"Dislike of Mr. Trump within the mainstream media is unalterable," she says. "It permeates every network, from intern to executive producer and CEO."
Noonan says it is difficult to escape the media's biased toward Trump.
"You cannot, at the end of a long day, relax with a talk show because it will take a highly political point of view, in a dominant and aggressive manner, as if politics were not part of life but life," she notes.
"It is obnoxious and assaultive. It effectively tells the audience: 'We only want you here if you agree with us. If you like Donald Trump, get lost.' Some news shows take a similar approach."
But Noonan suspects the decision to go against Trump has been well thought out.
"Here is a theory on what they're thinking: They're thinking attempts at fairness and balance in this charged atmosphere get them nowhere," she says.
"They're attacked by both sides. And anyway they think Mr. Trump is insane. They live on ratings, which determine advertising rates. Hillary Clinton got 2.9 million more votes than Mr. Trump, so the anti-Trump audience is larger."
And she adds those who oppose Trump tend to be younger and better educated — a more "desirable demographic."
Noonan theorized the media's bias is partly a financial decision, instead of a "good old-fashioned human and institutional flaw."
"I add only that it's not only cynical and destructive, as a business strategy it's stupid," Noon says. "Bias is boring. What has value at a time like this is playing it straight and presenting the facts. That's what they ought to do instead of taking a side."
