President Donald Trump's proposed federal budget will cripple the ability of the New York City Police Department to protect the nation's No. 1 terror target, the city's top police official said Thursday.
The proposed budget slashes $190 million in Homeland Security funding for the city, according to Police Commissioner James O'Neill, the New York Daily News reported.
"Nearly all federal funding to the NYPD would be eradicated," O'Neill said, the News reported. "It is the backbone of our entire counterterrorism apparatus."
Peter Donald, a spokesman for the NYPD, tweeted an additional statement from O'Neill.
