The National Rifle Association will offer at its annual convention this week in Atlanta an advanced training program and an accompanying insurance plan aimed at those who are legally allowed to carry concealed firearms, The Washington Free Beacon reported on Monday.
The new programs, collectively called NRA Carry Guard, are in addition to courses the NRA already offers, but have more rigorous standards for certification. The new programs will take place over a number of days instead of the usual classes that are for just a few hours.
"Of our 5 million members, a lot of those folks carry and they have been clamoring for the NRA to provide an elite product with respect to training, insurance, and education," NRA spokesman Bill Powers told the Free Beacon.
"It's going to be much more involved, much more intense."
Although the exact details of the program are still being worked out, the NRA said that more information will be released during the annual meeting.
On its website, the NRA says Carry Guard is coming in June and lists some of the benefits of the program, as well as different levels of membership.
The insurance plan will compete directly with offerings from other concealed-carry insurance firms, some of which have less expensive options or provide money upfront in case of criminal prosecutions instead of reimbursements. The NRA said their new program and insurance policy are superior due to its history and continued prominence in promoting concealed carry across the nation, the Free Beacon reported.
President Donald Trump is expected to attend the annual NRA convention on Friday, the first time a president has done so since 1983. Gun control groups are planning demonstrations to protest his administration's rolling back gun controls implemented by former President Barack Obama, The Washington Times reported.
Moms Demand Action for Gun Safety in America founder Shannon Watts told the paper that group members would protest at the convention "just as we have been showing up at town halls and in state houses across the country to stand up for the safety of our families and communities."
