A war of words has ensued between the NRA and Florida Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel following the shooting last week at Marjory Stoneman High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 people died, the Washington Examiner reported Friday.

It began Wednesday when Israel and NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch participated in a CNN town hall meeting where students questioned lawmakers and the NRA about gun safety. Israel accused Loesch of not "standing up for the students" affected by the shooting.

"You just told this group of people that you are standing up for them," Israel told Loesch Wednesday. "You're not standing up for them until you say, 'I want less weapons.'"

Israel then repeated the sentiment on Twitter.

However, Friday the NRA shot back at Israel on Twitter from its verified account, stating:

The attack has reopened the debate about gun safety and gun control as officials, citizens and lawmakers look for solutions to prevent future attacks.

Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old suspect in the shooting, is in custody facing 17 counts of premeditated murder. More than a dozen others were injured in the attack.
