Most Americans think it is "not appropriate" for players to kneel during the national anthem, which NFL players have been doing to protest racial inequality, according to the most recent poll from NBC/The Wall Street Journal.
President Donald Trump has been vocal in his criticism of players who kneel, but even though most Americans agree that it is "not appropriate," a sizable portion find it acceptable.
- 43 percent say appropriate.
- 54 percent say not appropriate.
When broken down by party affiliation, Republicans are far more likely to view kneeling negatively:
- 10 percent say appropriate.
- 88 percent say not appropriate.
While Democrats are much more likely to accept it:
- 72 percent say appropriate.
- 23 percent say not appropriate.
And independents are more evenly split:
- 42 percent say appropriate.
- 57 percent say not appropriate.
The poll was conducted from Aug. 18-22, with a margin of error of 3.27 percent.
