More than 200 members of the New York Police Department have tested positive for coronavirus, police commissioner Dermot Shea said Tuesday, according to WCBS.

New York has taken a tremendous hit as cases continue to spike. As of late Tuesday, there were 15,597 confirmed cases citywide and 192 deaths. In the state, there were 26,348 confirmed cases, roughly half of the U.S. total, according to Worldometer. At least 271 people have died from COVID-19.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the infection rate is doubling about every three days and speeding up even more.

"We haven't flattened the curve, and the curve is actually increasing," Cuomo said during his daily briefing.

Shea said 177 of the 211 sick are members of the police force. Approximately 177 are uniformed officers and 34 are civilian members.

He also said 2,774 are currently out sick.

"It's a trend as you talk about what we've seen and what we're trying to do with social distancing and lowering the curve," Shea told WCBS. "What we're seeing internally as an agency on the frontlines is we are still on an upward climb."
