The state of New York is setting aside $10 million to create a defense fund for poor immigrants who are fighting deportation, CNN reported.
Called the Liberty Defense Project (LDP), the state aims to help immigrants — who are not afforded free counsel that citizens are — who are 200 percent below the federal poverty line and don't already have legal representation.
The LDP is part of a public-private partnership with the Carnegie Corporation and the Ford Foundation, which have kicked another $1.5 million into the fund, CNN reported.
The LDP will work with 182 advocacy groups to provide lawyers to immigrants.
Significant is that the funding will allow groups to help all detained immigrants in the state, not just New York City.
